Bringing the YALC to life
We teamed up with Penguin Books and Orion Books to help them make a real splash at the Young Adult Literature Convention, held in Kensington Olympia alongside Comic Con. The weekend brought together favourite tales and publications as the very best young adult books and authors were celebrated – with many members of the public getting into character and donning their cosplay. And we were lucky enough to be involved in more than one exciting stall and project.
First off, we worked with Penguin Books on a very special build, recreating a full size replica canoe from Philip Pullman’s latest novel, The Book of Dust. Our very own La Belle Sauvage drew in a crowd, as fans were able to recreate the front cover of last year’s must-read for themselves, and be fully submerged in the infamous watercraft.
We were also lucky enough to work with Orion to bring Carl the Robot to life. Hailing from An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, a much anticipated debut novel by Hank Green, Carl’s instantly recognisable figure was constantly turning heads and had everyone searching for answers as well as posing for hugs.
And our work was not yet done. To help Penguin drum up excitement for the soon to be published novel Dear Evan Hansen, based on the broadway musical, we arranged for a choir to flashmob YALC and give everyone a taster of what was to come. The song, Sincerely Me, was caught on camera by many surprised onlookers – and even found its way to the Metro for a special feature.
